How to take a screenshot on iPhone or Android

Use the correct buttons to capture your phone screen, find the image, take a scrolling screenshot, and fix common screenshot problems.

Quick answer: On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press the side button and volume up together. On an iPhone with a Home button, press the side or top button and Home. On most Android phones, quickly press power and volume down together. The screenshot is normally saved in Photos or your gallery.

Take a screenshot on iPhone

For an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume up button at the same time. For an iPhone with Touch ID, use the side button and Home button; older models may use the top button and Home button.

Open Photos, go to Collections, then Media Types and Screenshots to find the image. Tap the preview after capturing if you want to crop, mark up, share, or delete it immediately.

  • Face ID: side button + volume up
  • Home button: side or top button + Home
  • Press briefly—holding the buttons may open another menu

Take a screenshot on Android

On most Android phones, open the screen you want and press power and volume down at the same time. If that does not work, hold the power button and look for Screenshot, or check the quick settings panel.

Android menus vary by manufacturer. Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other brands may also offer gestures or voice controls, but the two-button method is the best first choice.

Capture a long page

After taking a screenshot, look for Full Page on a supported iPhone page or Capture more, Scroll, or a similar button on Android. Adjust the area and save it. The option appears only in supported apps and pages.

A full-page iPhone capture may be saved as an image or PDF depending on the content and software version.

If the screenshot does not work

Remove a thick case if it prevents both buttons from being pressed together, release the buttons quickly, and confirm that the phone has free storage. Restart the phone if the screenshot controls are unresponsive.

Some banking, streaming, private-mode, or work-managed apps intentionally block screenshots. In that case, the screen may turn black or display a security message.

  • Try the buttons again with a quick press
  • Check Photos or the Screenshots album
  • Free storage space if saving fails
  • Respect security restrictions inside protected apps
