Does Restarting Your Phone Delete Anything?
A normal phone restart keeps your photos, apps, messages, accounts, and settings. Learn what can be lost and when a restart is safe.
What stays on your phone after a restart
Saved information remains in storage while the phone’s active processes stop and reload. Your installed apps, camera photos, downloaded files, contacts, messages, account sign-ins, home-screen layout, and system settings should still be present when the phone starts again.
Restarting can also finish a software update or clear a temporary fault. It does not create a new phone setup and should not ask you to erase the device.
What you could lose
Anything that exists only in an app’s temporary working state may disappear. Examples include an unfinished form, an unsent message draft that the app does not save, progress in a game since its last save, or edits that have not been stored or synced.
Save important work before restarting when possible. If the phone is frozen and must be force restarted, losing unsaved work may be unavoidable, but saved files should remain intact.
Normal restart versus force restart
A normal restart is initiated through the power menu and allows software to close cleanly. A force restart uses physical buttons because the screen or system is unresponsive. Both are designed to start the phone again without erasing its storage.
Follow the exact steps for your model. Apple and Samsung use different button sequences, and holding buttons incorrectly can open an emergency or recovery screen instead.
The warning sign that you selected the wrong option
If the phone warns that apps, accounts, files, or settings will be erased, you are not performing a normal restart. Back out and review the option. Wording such as Erase All Content and Settings, Factory Data Reset, or Delete All indicates a destructive reset.
- Restart or reboot: safe for saved data
- Reset network settings: removes saved network-related settings
- Factory reset or erase all content: removes personal data
Frequently asked questions
Will restarting delete my photos?
No. Photos already saved on the phone or in cloud storage should remain after a normal restart.
Will restarting sign me out of apps?
Usually no, although a security-sensitive app may ask you to unlock or authenticate again after the phone starts.
Does a force restart erase a phone?
No. It is intended to reboot an unresponsive phone, not erase it. Unsaved app activity can still be lost.
